SCL & SPCL Costa Rica @ UNA 2018

  • This option is limited to University students only. A current and valid student ID number must be included in your registration information.

The Registration fee includes coffee breaks, conference materials and transportation to Limón. Lunch is not included and may be purchased at one of the many establishments nearby.

La tarifa de inscripción incluye los tiempos de café, los materiales de la conferencia, y el bus a Limón. El almuerzo no esta incluido pero lo pueden conseguir en alguno de los muchos establecimientos cercanos.

NB: A $15 fee will be deducted from all refunds. There are no refunds for cancellations after 5 July.

The Society for Caribbean Linguistics (SCL), in collaboration with the Society for Pidgin and Creole Languages (SPCL), will meet in Costa Rica from 5 to 12 August 2018 for its 22nd Biennial Conference. The Conference is hosted by the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica under the theme “Connecting the Caribbean: Languages, Borders, and Identities.”

IMPORTANT! Please note that this is a split-site Conference, beginning in Heredia on 5 August, them moving on to Límón from 8 to 11 August. Transportation between the two sites will be provided for presenters (see Registration Fee below). Presenters can pre-pay for their guests' bus passes and dinner tickets through this registration form.


STEP 1 - Register with SCL here, using your designated registration code.

STEP 2 - Make your payment at the UNA (Costa Rica) PROLINCA website. 

On completion of Step 1 here, you will receive an SCL invoice. Please note the number for proceeding to payment at the UNA, Costa Rica site.

Note that there are a number of registration categories, each of which has its own designated registration code. Conference presenters will have received an email with your specific assigned code. Please be sure to have it in hand when ready to register. Observers and other non-presenters, and those who have not received an email for any reason, should write to treasurer@scl-online.net to request their code. Message us at our Help Desk on our Facebook event page for any registration form matters. Contact the Local Organising Committee for any details related to on site matters.

The form has a number of questions, the answers for which are crucial for a successful and smoothly run conference. All questions have Not Applicable options. We would be grateful if you would take the time to complete the entire form before submitting. 

The Participants' Registration Fee covers the following: all conference materials, the Monday morning opening ceremony cocktails, coffee breaks, and transportation to Limón. Dinners and t-shirts are optional and not included in the registration fee. An Earlybird Payment Option is available at Regular and Student rates up to 30 June. Lunch is not included and may be purchased at one of the many establishments nearby.  

Non-Emergency Cancellation Policy: Such cancellations are possible up to 15 July 2018 only, as follows: 

  • a cancellation fee of 25% of registration costs will be applied for cancellations received up to 1 July;
  • a cancellation fee of 50% of registration costs will be applied for cancellations received up to 15 July.

No refund is possible after 15 July, unless in accordance with the Emergency Policy below.

All refunds will be done via a bank transfer or credit card refund to the payee nominated account after the conference (all bank charges will be directly deducted from the refund). 

Emergency Cancellation Policy: Refunds may be granted if an attendee is unable to attend the conference due to a family death, illness, or other extraordinary circumstances. Bank charges may still be applied. In such circumstances, the SCL Treasurer must be contacted by e-mail - treasurer@scl-online.net.
