OP 41: García León & García León (December 2019) Panorama general de lan situación sociolingüística del archipiélago de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina, Colombia

Dear SCL member:

It has been quite a while since you have heard from the Publications portfolio. We have been working behind the scenes despite several challenges that have caused delays in getting the Occasional Papers (OP) ready according to the schedule we had planned.

This post announces the release of OP 41 which is a sociolinguistic profile of San Andrés, Providence Island, and Santa Catalina Island by members David Leonardo García León & Javier Enrique García León. For those who have been paying attention, you will notice that we have skipped over OP 39 and OP 40. The publication of those issues was further delayed by the theft of the machine that the pre-final versions were on. We are working to have them ready in short order. In addition to these, we will also have several other OPs for you to enjoy.

You will also notice that this OP is in Spanish, which is in keeping with the ethos of the Society to give space to all the languages of the Caribbean.

Announcing our Book Series, Studies in Caribbean Languages, with Language Science Press!

Studies in Caribbean Languages (Language Science Press)

Aims and Scope

This series publishes scholarly monographs and edited volumes on languages of the Caribbean, and Caribbean languages used in diaspora communities worldwide. The use of the term 'Caribbean' here should be taken to mean the Caribbean Sea, and specifically to language varieties spoken along the northern coast of South America, and the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts of North and Central America. In keeping with the tradition of the Society we will also consider books on Gullah and AAVE. The series welcomes works in all descriptive and theoretical frameworks regardless of the sub-discipline of linguistics. We are also interested in interdisciplinary works which explore the respective interface between language and areas such as anthropology, law, mathematics, media, music, psychology, sociology.

OP 38 Braithwaite (2017): A Sketch of the Linguistic Geography of Signed Languages in the Caribbean

Dear SCL member:

I bet you weren’t expecting any gifts today. Well, you will find one by going to the Members' Space (see main menu bar in red above) — OP 38 “A Sketch of the Linguistic Geography of Signed Languages in the Caribbean” by Ben Braithwaite.

Many years ago, we took the decision to discontinue publishing our Occasional Papers (OP) series in print format. This decision came as a result of the increasing costs and administrative work associated with printing and distributing the OP to all members of the Society. We could have raised subscription fees to meet the rising expenses, but your Exec knew that you would have loved us too much for that move. Going electronic was the obvious solution to keeping our expenses at a minimum and constraining your love for us.

The first thing to be said about this OP, is that it's been a long time coming. Sam Cook(e) was prophetic! This is the very first OP to look at Sign Languages used in the Caribbean, and being the first on the topic, it aptly attempts a survey of the whole region. SCL would like to thank Ben Braithwaite for his contribution, and for his patience and understanding. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the anonymous reviewers and the proofreaders who worked to ensure that we deliver the usual high quality you have come to expect.

You might notice that the publication says June 2017. It’s not a typo. I did say, it's been a long time coming, but here I think I can join Sam in the closing line of the refrain, "a change gonna come". We have another OP that is soon to appear, and another getting to the final stage of the review process. After the conference in Costa Rica, we hope to be able to bring out issues of the OP at more regular intervals. We will be aiming for one per quarter, and all hands will be required on deck.

Do enjoy!
